News / The European Museum of the Year Award has found a new home /

On the July 11th, 2018 the European Museum Forum and the Municipality of Portimao in the Algarve, Portugal signed an agreement that the Museum of Portimao will house and host the EMF Office and Archives for initial periods of three and ten years respectively.

EMF/EMYA is looking forward to once again having its various functions -  its historic archives and its current office - under one roof and integrated in a living museum environment.

The Museum of Portimao is a former winner of the Council of Europe prize (2010), and it is this museum's founding director, Jose Gameiro, former EMYA judge and chair of the EMYA jury, who has negotiated the agreement between the two partners.

'Consider this house your house now', said Portimao Mayor Isilda Varges Gomes, at the ceremony of signing the agreement. EMF chair Jette Sandahl spoke of the exciting possibilities and perspective of belonging to a place as welcoming as Portimao.

The agreement comes with a new prize within the general European of the Year Award scheme, to be given out by the EMYA jury already at the EMYA 2019 awards. ‘The Portimao Museum Prize will be awarded to the museum which makes all its visitors feel immediately welcome and confident that they belong', said chair of the jury, Mark O'Neill.

Jose Gameiro will be the formal coordinator of the Portimao-European Museum Forum partnership.
Pedro Branco of the Portimao Museum staff will manage the day to day affairs of EMF/EMYA.
