News / Update on EMYA Eligibility Criteria: Change Starting with EMYA2028 /

In the years following the pandemic, EMYA temporarily adjusted its eligibility criteria in recognition of the wide-ranging disruptions museums experienced — not only delays in openings or renewals, but also shifting project schedules, operational challenges, and uncertainties affecting long-term planning.

Our long-standing rule — that museums could apply if they had opened or been substantially renewed within the last three years — was therefore extended to a four-year window to ensure institutions were not unfairly excluded during this exceptional period.

The EMYA Jury has now decided to return to the original 3-year rule, with a transition designed to avoid any negative impact on museums currently preparing their applications.

The 4-year eligibility window will remain in place for EMYA2027.

The return to the 3-year window will apply starting with the EMYA2028 call for applications.

We are sharing this update early to support clarity and planning for all prospective applicants.

Further details will accompany the EMYA2028 call.
