As the gravity of climate change and the destruction of nature continues apace, and as their wide-ranging implications are increasingly felt in everyday life, museums carry a growing responsibility to respond. They play a vital role in reflecting on these urgent challenges and contributing to the safeguarding of the future for coming generations.
The Museum Prize for Environmental Sustainability recognizes a museum that demonstrates noteworthy commitment to addressing issues of sustainability and environmental health. Such commitment may be reflected in the museum’s approach to collecting, documentation, exhibitions, and public programming, as well as in its responsible and forward‑looking management of social, financial, and physical resources.
The recognition began as a Special Commendation for sustainability until 2019, before becoming a dedicated sustainability prize supported by Meyvaert in 2020 and 2021. From 2022 to 2025, it was presented as the Meyvaert Museum Prize for Environmental Sustainability, marking a clearer shift toward environmental responsibility as a central value in museum practice. As of 2026, it is presented under the name The Museum Prize for Environmental Sustainability, continuing its mission of recognising outstanding environmental sustainability in museums.
